Avelo was first established as Casino Express Airlines in 1987 to operate charter flights for a casino in Nevada, and later operated as Xtra Airways. Andrew Levy (Founder and CEO) later took over the airline and gave it a new direction. On April 8, 2021, it was officially renamed Avelo Airlines and backed by $125 million in initial funding. The airline began its first scheduled passenger service from Hollywood Burbank Airport in California to Sonoma County.

Boarding an Avelo Air Flight

Avelo Air Baggage Policy 

Avelo offers carry-on and checked baggage services. Baggage fees vary by itinerary, when you buy the bag, and other applicable conditions. Travelers should check the applicable baggage price before completing their booking because baggage charges can affect the overall cost of a low-fare ticket.

Avelo also allows special regulations for oversized, overweight, sports, and military baggage. Subject to Avelo’s applicable requirements and restrictions.

Avelo Airlines Seat Selection

Seat selection is optional and usually costs extra. Avelo also offers free family seating for children aged 14 and under when traveling with an accompanying adult. Avelo also offers seating options with additional legroom. According to Avelo, approximately one-third of its seats offer extra-legroom options.

Avelo Airlines Pet Policy

Avelo Airlines allows small cats, dogs, rabbits, and birds to travel in the cabin only. Pets must remain in an approved carrier under the seat, and only one carrier is allowed per passenger. A $125 fee applies each way, and you must reserve pets in advance. Avelo does not accept pets on international flights. Trained service dogs can travel free with the required documentation.

In-Flight Services Policy

Avelo does not offer Wi-Fi, power outlets, or seatback entertainment on its flights. Basic snacks and water may be available during the flight.

Avelo does not operate a traditional airline loyalty program. However, Avelo PLUS membership is available for travelers who want additional perks and savings.

Avelo PLUS is a paid annual membership that offers benefits such as member-only fares and free priority boarding. Membership costs $59 for the first year and renews at $99 per year. Benefits can also extend to up to 9 companions traveling on the same reservation.

If your checked bag does not arrive at the destination, report the missing baggage to Avelo as soon as possible. Keep your baggage claim information and travel documents available when filing a report. 

Passengers should report damaged checked baggage to Avelo promptly after arrival. Keep the damaged bag, baggage tag, and other relevant documents until the claim process is complete. Coverage or reimbursement may depend on the type and extent of damage and Avelo’s applicable baggage rules.

Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN)

Tweed-New Haven Airport in Connecticut is Avelo’s largest and primary base. It serves as an important operating point for the airline’s Northeast network, with multiple nonstop routes connecting the region to other U.S. destinations.

Wilmington Airport (ILG)

Wilmington Airport in Delaware serves the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley area. Avelo uses the airport as a base for convenient point-to-point flights, giving travelers an alternative to the larger Philadelphia International Airport.

Avelo has announced an order for up to 100 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, with plans to become the first U.S. airline to operate the type in 2028.

Cabin and In-Flight Experience

Avelo Airlines offers a single-class economy cabin on its Boeing 737 aircraft, with a standard 3-3 seating layout. Travelers can choose standard seats or pay for extra-legroom options, including Stretch and Stretch+ seats. Stretch+ also includes an empty middle seat for added personal space.
